I recently did a whole body detox cleanse for health reasons. This post is phase 2 of that cleanse, targeting the lymphatic system. If you missed the first phase, here it is: How and Why I Did a Whole Body Detox Cleanse, Should You? There will be two more in this whole body detox cleanse series.
What does the lymphatic system do?
In an very simplistic overview, it’s a body system that rids toxins and waste from the body. It is comprised of organs and tissues with lymph vessels and nodes. This system is a portion of our overall immune system. The fluid that flows in these vessels is lymph. This fights bacteria, viruses and infections, and also destroy abnormal cells. It is a critical body system to help keep us healthy.
The lymph glands are found in our neck, armpits, chest, abdomen, pelvis and groin areas. The lymphatic system does not have a pump, like our blood does, which is the heart. The lymphatic system relies on movement to help it flow.
The movement may be exercise, such as simple walking. There are two particularly effective methods I’d like to highlight however. The first is rebounding. It is a mini-trampoline that you use in your home. Its very powerful at getting lymph moving in your system. It’s also great exercise. You bounce or run in place anywhere from 10-30 minutes.
The second method is a whole body vibration machine. I got one about a year ago that I use a lot. They have many health and fitness benefits when used regularly. These benefits include increasing bone density, increasing muscle mass, fighting cellulite, not to mention moving lymph.
The machine I personally own is the one shown. I enjoy it alot and is actually quite relaxing to use. The one caution with it however, is when starting out, go slow. It delivers such a powerful detox effect, that too much too soon could cause you to not feel well, temporarily. Very similar to getting a deep tissue massage and you don’t drink enough water afterwards. You can experience flu-like symptoms. Start with slower speeds for only 3-4 minutes, and slowly increase both. Drink plenty of water.
During this phase of the whole body detox cleanse I was on, I continued to drink alot of fresh, pure water. I also started incorporating whole organic foods, breaking the fast I had been on. I can’t tell you how amazing steamed cauliflower with just salt and pepper tasted!
During phase one, I dropped more weight than I had in my life. By the end, I was feeling really good. My skin was super soft, people were actually commenting on how amazing my skin looked, and my energy levels were good. The weight loss was a nice, side-effect. It wasn’t my main goal.
During the lymphatic cleanse I also began to do dry skin brushing. It’s outlined here in this post Dry Skin Brushing The Health and Beauty Benefits. It also helps the body to detox on another level, via the skin and helps stimulate the lymphatic system.
After I did dry skin brushing, I would soak for about half an hour or so, in a warm bathtub filled with Epsom salts. Check out my post Reasons Your Family Needs To Filter Water For Showers. You don’t want to be soaking in chlorine and other chemicals in tap water (unless you know yours is pure). You want to rid your body of toxins, not add more in. It’s not difficult or expensive to filter this water.
Lastly, during this phase of the whole body detox cleanse, I used essential oils. I put them in a glass rollerball bottle. Several times a day, I rolled some oil on my neck, armpits, abdomen and groin (at the top of your legs) area. Here’s my recipe:
- 5 drops bergamot essential oil
- 5 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops lime essential oil
- 5 drops orange essential oil
Fill the rest of the bottle with a carrier oil like almond oil, avocado oil or the oil of your choice.
At this point in the whole body detox cleanse, I stopped drinking the detox tea. I stopped juicing the vegetables. I slowly added in basically fruits and vegetables.
I did have a shocking experience however, that made me very sad. After 3 days of starting to eat again, I decided to try a cup of organic coffee. I LOVE coffee. It’s a hobby to me. Immediately after drinking a cup (with some almond milk, which I’m fine with), I thought I was getting the beginning of the ‘mother load’ of all roscea flares.
My face turned beet red and was fiery hot! I grabbed ice (no towels or anything, just ice), and packed it on my face. My face was so hot, the ice was immediately melting, water pouring everywhere. Then, my entire body broke out in hives. I was having a full on, allergic reaction, to something I have drank my whole life. Obviously, coffee was something I could no longer have. It was causing physical problems I hadn’t been previously aware of.
That is a huge advantage of doing a fast (consult your doctor first). It can double as an ‘elimination diet’ so to speak. By slowly introducing foods back in afterwards, it can expose foods (or drinks) that may be causing underlying health problems.
While I’m very sad at coffee being a problem for me, I’m grateful to have discovered this. I know that by eliminating it from my body, it will improve my overall health.
